How Much You Can Save With a Grocery Card?

This depends on the card you have and how much you spend on groceries every month. Using a specific grocery store card will help you save more money than if you used just a generic card with grocery store rewards. Using cashback is the best way to save money.

Some other cards offer reward points instead of cashback. Once you have enough reward points, you can use the points to buy things like flight tickets or get discounts on car rentals and hotels. This means whatever money you saved on the flight or whatever else you bought with your reward points is how much money you saved.

Understand How Gas & Grocery Credit Cards Work

What is a Grocery Store Credit Card?

A grocery store credit card is a special credit card that you use to buy groceries at major supermarkets, or in some cases, convenience stores. Each time you buy groceries, you will be able to receive cashback or points that you can redeem later.

Many American families use grocery store credit cards because it allows them to save money on food. Food is often the largest purchase within households and having a credit card with rewards can help you save money on what’s most important.

How to Pick the Right Gas & Grocery Card?

Grocery store cards are a great way to save money on your weekly trips to the supermarket. If you have many mouths to feed, they can be especially helpful in saving money for the entire family.

Here are the 5 main features to look for that might surprise you:

  • Annual fee. Many grocery store cards don’t have annual fees for the first year. This allows you to start earning rewards and points right away without needing to pay any money.
  • Most grocery store credit cards give you direct cashback. Once you pay the credit card bill back at the end of the month, you will be able to get a portion of the money back directly into your pocket. This gives you more money to spend on the next grocery store run.
  • Use them at all supermarkets. Most cards allow you to spend at all major supermarkets making shopping easy.
  • Welcome bonus. Receive a welcome bonus to spend at the grocery store once you spend a certain amount with the first 90 days. Many of the cards above including on our best cards with high sign up bonus list.
  • Use grocery points for travel. Redeem your grocery store reward points for other things like airline tickets or travel.

How Do You Shop?

Picking the right grocery store credit card depends on how you shop and where you like to get your groceries. Whether you shop in person or have your groceries delivered will also affect which card you should get.

For example, the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card offers you 5% at Amazon.com, Amazon Fresh , Whole Foods Market and on Chase Travel purchases, 2% cash back on gas stations, restaurants and on local transit and commuting, 1% cash back on all other purchases. Getting one of these cards will help you earn cashback and get a discount on your groceries.

Pay Attention To Excluded Stores

Most grocery reward cards exclude big-name stores and wholesale stores like Costco and BJs. If you prefer to get all your groceries at one of these places, you might be better off getting a store credit card to that place instead of going for a grocery credit card.

Most grocery credit cards also don’t allow you to use them at big-name stores like Walmart and Target. Since both of these stores now offer food and grocery sections, you might get all your food there instead of an actual grocery store.

What Are Your Spending Habits?

If you shop at grocery stores in person and you don’t buy wholesale or in bulk, you will have a wide range of grocery store credit cards to choose from. To compare them and pick the right one for you, consider looking at the reward rates and the associated costs. Some of the best ones offer as high as 6% cashback, but they might have high annual fees.

If you are strapped for cash and you need a gas & grocery store credit card, consider getting one with no or a low annual fee. This will ensure you aren’t spending too much money at the beginning just to get the card.

How to Maximize Gas & Grocery Credit Cards?

If you have a grocery store credit card, you want to make sure you are maximizing savings and using the card whenever you can to get reward points and cashback. Make sure to follow these tips and tricks to maximize the benefits of your grocery credit cards:

Each card is unique in the places where you can use the card and get rewards and points back. If you primary buy your groceries at Walmart because they are much cheaper, try to figure out which one is cheaper in the long run. In some cases, shopping at Walmart might be cheaper than buying food at a supermarket and getting cashback. You also want to make sure you are only using the card where you are getting rewards and not at wholesale stores.

Most cards will cap your earnings at a certain point. Once you’ve reached that point, you might get no cashback or you might get a smaller percentage. It all depends on your card company.

Along with the cash back rewards, you can also use mobile apps to find coupons and discount cards and use them along with your credit card for cashback rewards. Using both will ensure you are getting as many savings as possible.

If you are buying your groceries online, make sure you use the shopping portals through your credit card company so all your purchases get extra points, cashback, and miles.

How We Picked The Best Gas & Grocery Cards: Methodology

To identify the best credit cards for gas and grocery purchases, our team conducted thorough research across various issuers, focusing on major banks and financial institutions. We rated these cards based on four key categories tailored for consumers seeking rewards on gas and grocery spending:

  • Rewards Structure (40%): We evaluate the rewards program, including cash back percentage or points earned per dollar spent on gas and grocery purchases, bonus categories for accelerated rewards, and redemption options. Cards with higher rewards rates, bonus categories specific to gas and groceries, and flexible redemption choices score higher in this category.

  • Features & Benefits (30%): This category assesses additional features that enhance the overall value of the card for gas and grocery purchases, such as absence of annual fees, introductory APR offers, additional perks like extended warranty protection or purchase protection, and special benefits tailored for grocery and gas spending. Cards offering a comprehensive range of benefits without excessive fees earn higher scores.

  • Ease of Use & Redemption (20%): We examine the ease of earning and redeeming rewards for gas and grocery purchases, including the clarity of rewards terms and conditions, accessibility of rewards redemption options, and convenience of rewards tracking tools. Cards with straightforward rewards programs and user-friendly redemption processes receive higher ratings, ensuring a seamless experience for cardholders.

  • Issuer Reputation (10%): We scrutinize each issuer's reputation, considering customer feedback, financial stability, and regulatory standing. Issuers with positive reviews from cardholders and a track record of providing excellent rewards programs and customer service for gas and grocery purchases receive higher ratings in this category.

This comprehensive evaluation ensures that the best credit cards for gas and grocery purchases offer competitive rewards, valuable benefits, and a user-friendly experience for consumers seeking to maximize their rewards on everyday spending.
