How Do Citi ThankYou Points Work?

Citi ThankYou Points are the currency for the Citi Loyalty program. If you’re approved for a new Citi ThankYou credit card, you can enroll in the program.

Not all Citi cards use this rewards scheme, but if you have a Thank You card, you can earn points with purchases, with the specific number of points varying according to your card and the purchase category.

Many cards feature a tiered reward structure, so you could earn three points for every dollar in the top tier category, two points per dollar in a second category, and a base rate of one point per dollar on all your other purchases. This means that you are likely to earn at least one point for every dollar.

Fortunately, you don’t need to worry about keeping track of your points, as Citi will automatically calculate the points for each transaction and when the purchase is applied to your account, your points will be added to your account.

You can continue to accumulate points until you’re ready to redeem them. So, here we’ll discover the best ways to redeem Citi ThankYou points.

How Much Are Citi ThankYou Points Worth?

As with most credit card loyalty programs, there is no set value for ThankYou points. The points value will vary according to your preferred redemption method. For example:

  • 1 Cent On Citi ThankYou Travel Portal: This is one of the most attractive and easiest redemption methods as there is a straight points value of one cent each. This means that if you are booking a $200 flight, it will cost 20,000 ThankYou points.

Unlike many other credit card travel portals, it is not possible to increase the value of your points by booking with specific airlines. However, this does mean that you don’t need to spend hours researching the best deals, you can simply look at the cash price of tickets and know that you’ll need the appropriate number of points.

  • 1-2 Cents On Transfer to Partner Programs: The value of ThankYou points can get a bit complex when you start transferring them to partner programs. Citi has partnerships with several airlines and hotel programs, and the typical transfer rate is 1:1. However, if you have the Citi Premier® Card, you might enjoy better transfer rates. This means that one ThankYou point will equal one mile or point in the partner program. The cash value of these points will depend on the specific program, but on average, they usually range from 1 to 2 cents each.
  • 0.5 Cent On Cashback: Citi also allows customers to redeem their ThankYou points for cash back with a set redemption value of one cent per point. So, if you have 5,000 points, it would be $50 in cash back. This cash back can be applied as statement credit for any Citi account including your credit card, loan or mortgage account.

You can also receive a direct deposit into your bank account or receive a check in the mail. However, it is important to note that some cards don’t allow this cash redemption option at one cent, and you’ll only get a 0.5 cents per point rate.

  • 1 Cent Gift Cards: Citi also offers an impressive choice of gift card options, with a typical redemption rate of one cent per point. So, if you want a $25 gift card, you’ll need 2,500 ThankYou points.
  • 0.8 Cent Amazon Shopping: You can also use your Citi ThankYou points when you shop on Amazon.com. However, this provides a lower cash value for your points, as you can expect 0.8 cents per point.

11. A Variety Of Hotels To Pick Up From

The Citi Travel portal provides access to a variety of travel deals including hotel stays. This means that you can add a touch of luxury to your vacation and stay at the Hyatt using your Citi ThankYou points.

For example, you could stay at the Park Hyatt Chicago for $299 per night or 23,900 points. The season and even the day of the week you stay can affect rates.

How To Book Hotel With Citi Travel Portal?

Searching and booking a hotel through the Citi ThankYou portal is quite similar to how ti works on booking.com. You'll need to enter your destination, the dates you'll be there, and the number of visitors into the search fields after choosing the “Hotels” option from the main menu.

You can sort the results using the property class, price, distance, hotel name, and suggested results on the results page.  Click “Choose Room” to learn more about the hotel you're considering. You'll be presented with a variety of bed options, rate types with cancellation policies, and, if appropriate, various packages (breakfast included, for example).

You will reach the final booking screen after selecting the rate you choose, where you may once more select your mode of payment and add guest information.

12. Free Nights On Choice Privileges

While booking through the Citi Travel Portal may allow you to redeem Citi ThankYou points at a rate of one cent each for stays at these chains, you might wish to transfer them first.

Choice Privileges, the hotel chain's loyalty program, offers lodging under the Comfort Inn, Quality Inn, Clarion, Cambria, and Ascend Collection brands. The season and even the day of the week you stay can affect rates.

If you hold a Citi Premier® or Citi Prestige® Card, you can transfer points in increments of 1,000 points at a 1:2 ratio. The transfer ratio between the Citi ThankYou® Preferred Card, Citi® Double Cash Card, and Citi Rewards+® Card, which have no annual fees, is 1:1.5.

13. Free Nights On Wyndham Rewards

Another option to transfer hotel points is Wyndham Rewards. Wyndham Rewards includes well-known brands including Super 8, Days Inn, Howard Johnson, and Travelodge. The award system for Wyndham is straightforward; depending on the resort, you'll spend 7,500, 15,000, or 30,000 points for an award night.

You can transfer funds to Wyndham at a 1:1 ratio using the Citi Premier® or Citi Prestige® Cards. Otherwise, the ratio is 5:4 on the Citi Rewards+® Card, Citi ThankYou® Preferred Card, and Citi® Double Cash Card.

  • Macy's Gift Card – The card is redeemable only for merchandise and in-store services at Macy's, Macy's Backstage, Market by Macy's and macys.com

Can Citi ThankYou Points be Redeemed for Cash?

Yes, Citi allows you to redeem your ThankYou points for statement credit, direct deposits, or a check. You can select this option on the redeem points menu. However, it may not be the best thing to do.

You can use the statement credit on your credit card account or any Citi credit account including your mortgage, but this requires a call to the Citi customer support line.

However, the one cent per ThankYou point redemption rate does not apply to all Citi credit cards. If you have Citi Prestige, Citi Premier, Citi Custom Cash or Citi Double Cash cards, you should enjoy this redemption rate, but other cards may only offer a 0.5 cents per point rate.
