How to Open an American Express Bank Account?
The best way to open an American Express bank account is online. You can browse the website to find available products and promotions. On each product page, you’ll see an “Apply Now” button. When you click this, you’ll be directed to start the account opening process.
- Provide Your Basic Details: The first step of the application process requires you to provide your full name, Social Security Number, email and phone number.
- Complete the Application: You will then be directed to complete the full application form. However, at any point, you have the option to save the application to resume the process later.
- Confirm the Terms and Conditions: One of the last stages of account opening is to read through and confirm the terms and conditions.
- Fund the Account: Finally, you’ll have the option to immediately fund the account and set up your online banking access. This is a good idea for an account with a promotion, as you’ll need to make sure the initial deposit is in the account within the specified deadline.
Things to Watch For With Amex Bank Accounts
American Express National Bank may have a more streamlined product line compared to many banks, but there are still a few things to watch out for before you open an account.
- Are You An Existing Customer: If you are a personal customer and want to open a checking account, you’ll need to already be an existing American Express customer. Your American Express credit card account needs to have been open and active for at least three months to qualify for this account, so you’ll need to plan ahead.
- Do You Have Membership Rewards? If you already have at least one American Express product, you’re likely to already be enrolled in the Membership Rewards program, but if you haven’t bothered to check your Membership Rewards dashboard, you may find now is a good time. American Express allows you to accumulate Rewards via several linked products, so you can earn rewards even quicker.
- Check the Terms and Conditions: Since the American Express banking products are a little more specialized, it is even more crucial to check the product terms and conditions before you apply. For example, you may be limited to a maximum number of withdrawals on your savings or incur hefty penalties and account charges if you go overdrawn or need to perform certain account activities.

How to Pick the Best American Express Card
With so many cards and great new cardholder bonuses, choosing the best American Express card can seem a little daunting. However, if you want to narrow down your options, there are some points you should consider. These include:
- Annual Fee: In most cases, if you’re prepared to pay an annual fee, your American Express card benefits will be greater. However, you need to calculate if paying an annual fee represents the best value for you. There is no point in paying a $500 annual fee, if you don’t earn more than that in additional card benefits. If you are a more modest spender, you may be better suited to a card with a lower or no annual fee.
- Bonus Terms: In most cases, American Express is very generous, giving you plenty of time to achieve the spend limit to qualify for the introductory bonus. However, you still need to be realistic. If you typically don’t spend a lot on your credit card, don’t opt for a card with a high spending requirement.
- Brand Loyalty: Since American Express has a number of partnership cards, you also need to consider if you’re brand loyal to a particular airline or hotel chain. If you tend to prefer a particular company, these cards can be a great way to boost your loyalty program balance. On the other hand, if you simply find the best value flight or accommodation, regardless of the company, a more general card is likely to be best for you.
- 0% Intro Rate: If you are planning on making a large purchase or have a balance to transfer to your new card, you’ll have fewer American Express card options. There are only a couple of cards that offer 0%, so check the terms carefully.
