What Is The Marriott Bonvoy Program?

Marriott Bonvoy is the loyalty program of Marriott International, a multinational hospitality company that operates a diverse portfolio of hotels and resorts around the world.

The Marriott Bonvoy program allows members to earn and redeem points for stays at Marriott properties, as well as enjoy perks such as room upgrades, free nights, and exclusive member rates.

Members can also access a range of experiences and events through the program, including culinary, cultural, and sporting events.

How Does The Marriott Bonvoy Program Work?

As a member of the Marriott Bonvoy program, you can earn points for eligible stays at participating Marriott properties, as well as at participating partners including airlines, rental car companies, and credit card partners.

You can also earn points for other activities such as dining at participating restaurants, spas, and golf courses, or by using a Marriott Bonvoy credit card.

To redeem your points, you can use the Marriott Bonvoy website or mobile app to book a stay at any participating Marriott property. The number of points required for a free night varies by property and date, but you can generally redeem your points for a free night at any participating property starting at 7,500 points.

You can also use your points for other rewards such as room upgrades, experiences, and flights on participating airlines.

What Can You Get With Marriott Bonvoy Points?

As a member of the Marriott Bonvoy program, you can use your points to redeem a variety of rewards, including:

With the Marriott Bonvoy progra, you can se your certificates for free nights at any hotel or resort participating in Marriott Bonvoy®, including a portfolio of 30 brands worldwide.

Also, you can use instant redemption for anything you can charge to your hotel room during your stay at a hotel, including food and drink, spa services, and more.

The number of points required for a free night can vary based on the demand for a particular property and date. If you have flexibility in your travel dates, consider booking your stay during off-peak times, when the number of points required may be lower.

If you have a large balance of points and are staying at a property with a high redemption rate for free nights, you may be able to get more value by using your points for a room upgrade instead.

Marriott Bonvoy has a number of airline partners, and you can use your points to book flights on participating airlines

The value you get for your points will depend on the specific airline and route, so it's a good idea to compare the cost of a flight in points versus cash to see which option provides the best value.

You can redeem your points for experiences and events, such as culinary, cultural, and sporting events.

It's important to note that availability for experiences and events may be limited, and they are subject to change. Be sure to check the Marriott Bonvoy website or mobile app regularly to see what new experiences and events are available.

These offers and promotions may include things like:

  • Special rates and discounts on stays at participating Marriott properties
  • Early access to promotions and sales
  • Exclusive member rates on car rentals and flights
  • Extra points for stays at participating properties
  • Complimentary room upgrades (subject to availability)
  • Complimentary breakfast or other amenities at participating properties

What Is The Best Use Of Marriott Bonvoy Points?

The best use of Marriott Bonvoy points depends on your individual travel needs and preferences. Here are a few ideas for how you can use your points to get the most value:

  • Book free nights at high-category properties: Marriott Bonvoy has a tiered redemption system, with the number of points required for a free night varying by property and date. Generally, higher-category properties will require more points for a free night, but they also tend to have higher nightly rates. If you have a large balance of points and are willing to redeem them for a high-category property, you can get a higher value per point.
  • Take advantage of point savers rates: Marriott Bonvoy offers “point savers” rates at select properties, which allow you to redeem a lower number of points for a free night. These rates are limited and subject to availability, but they can be a good way to stretch your points further.

Ultimately, the best use of Marriott Bonvoy points will depend on your personal travel goals and preferences. It's a good idea to consider all of your options and do some research to determine the best way to use your points.

Limitations & Restrictions To Consider

Like most loyalty programs, the Marriott Bonvoy program has a number of limitations and restrictions that you should be aware of. These include:

  • Points expiration: Marriott Bonvoy points will expire if you do not have qualifying activity in your account within a 24-month period. Qualifying activity includes earning or redeeming points through stays at participating Marriott properties, participating partners, or by using a Marriott Bonvoy credit card.
  • Capacity controls: Some properties may have limited availability for point redemption and may be subject to capacity controls, which means that rooms may not be available for point redemption even if you have sufficient points.
  • Blackout dates: Some properties may have blackout dates when points cannot be redeemed for free nights. These blackout dates are determined by the individual property and are subject to change.
  • Point requirements: The number of points required for a free night stay varies by property and date, and some properties may have a higher redemption rate than others. Additionally, the number of points required for a free night stay may be higher during peak travel periods or for special events.
  • Other restrictions: The Marriott Bonvoy program has a number of other restrictions, such as the inability to transfer points to another member's account or to use points to purchase gift cards. Be sure to review the terms and conditions of the program to familiarize yourself with all of the limitations and restrictions.

It's important to be aware of these limitations and restrictions when using the Marriott Bonvoy program so that you can plan your stays and redemptions accordingly.

  2. Use your Marriott Bonvoy credit card for purchases: Once you have a Marriott Bonvoy credit card, you can earn points for purchases made with the card. The number of points you earn per dollar spent will depend on the specific credit card you have. Some Marriott Bonvoy credit cards also offer bonus points for purchases made at participating Marriott properties or with participating partners.
  3. Pay your credit card balance in full each month: To avoid paying interest on your purchases and get the most value out of your points, it's a good idea to pay your credit card balance in full each month. This will also help you to avoid damaging your credit score.

Buying Marriott Bonvoy Points

Marriott Bonvoy allows members to buy points in increments of 1,000 points, up to a maximum of 60,000 points per calendar year. The cost of buying points varies depending on the number of points you purchase and when you purchase them. Generally, the cost per point decreases as the number of points you purchase increases.

To buy points, you'll need to be a member of the Marriott Bonvoy program and have a valid email address associated with your account. Here's how to buy points:

  1. Sign in to your Marriott Bonvoy account on the Marriott website or mobile app.
  2. Click on the “Points” tab.
  3. Click on the “Buy Points” button.
  4. Enter the number of points you want to purchase and follow the prompts to complete the purchase.

It's important to note that the cost of buying points may be higher than the value of the points when redeemed for stays or other rewards, so it's a good idea to consider the cost versus the value before buying points. Additionally, points purchased through the Marriott Bonvoy program are non-refundable and may not be transferred to another member's account.

FAQs

Based on estimates, 10,000 Bonvoy points are worth roughly $70. However, the exact value is dependent on a number of other factors, including redemption rate, travel dates, and redemption options.

The number of Marriott Bonvoy points required for a free night stay varies by property and date. Some properties may require fewer points for a free night stay, while others may require more.

Additionally, the number of points required for a free night stay may be higher during peak travel periods or for special events.

Bonvoy is a word that combines “bon” (meaning “good” in French) and “voyage” (meaning “journey” in French). It was chosen as the name for the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program to convey the idea of having a good journey or travel experience.

The name was chosen to replace the previous loyalty program names of Marriott Rewards, The Ritz-Carlton Rewards, and Starwood Preferred Guest. The name change was part of a larger rebranding effort by Marriott to create a more cohesive loyalty program following the acquisition of Starwood Hotels & Resorts.
