Can I Transfer Chase Sapphire Preferred Points To United?

Yes, you can definitely transfer Chase Sapphire Preferred points to United MileagePlus miles.

It's a smooth and straightforward process with a 1:1 transfer ratio, meaning every 1,000 Chase points becomes 1,000 United miles.

Sometimes, transfer bonuses introduce a temporary “exchange rate” different from 1:1, further increasing the value of your points. The transfer typically takes 24-48 hours because both systems need to update their records and ensure everything is synchronized.

  • Trip Cancellation/Interruption Insurance: You can be reimbursed for pre-paid, non-refundable passenger fares (up to $1,500 per person and $6,000 per trip) if your trip is canceled or cut short due to covered situations like sickness or severe weather.
  • Trip Delay Reimbursement: If your common carrier travel is delayed over 12 hours or requires an overnight stay, you and your family are covered for unreimbursed expenses, such as meals and lodging, up to $500 per ticket.

Main Drawbacks: How They Compare?

United Explorer Card

united explorer

  • Niche Rewards: The rewards structure of the United Explorer Card heavily favors spending on United Airlines and dining. If your spending habits don't align with these categories, you may find it challenging to maximize your rewards compared to the Sapphire Preferred, which offers more flexible and balanced rewards for dining and travel expenses.
  • Limited Travel Partnerships: The United Explorer Card is primarily focused on United Airlines and its Star Alliance partners. In contrast, the Chase Sapphire Preferred has a more extensive list of transfer partners, including various airlines and hotel loyalty programs. This makes the Sapphire Preferred more versatile for travelers who prefer a broader range of options
redeem United miles for hotels
Redeem United miles for hotels (screenshot taken by our team from United app)
  • No Dining or Grocery Bonuses: The United Explorer Card lacks bonus categories for everyday spending, unlike the Chase Sapphire Preferred.
Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

chase_sapphire_preffered

  • Fewer Airline-Related Bonuses: The Chase Sapphire Preferred does not offer specific bonuses for United Airlines purchases or dining at United Club locations, which the United Explorer Card does. If you primarily spend on these categories, you might earn fewer rewards with the Sapphire Preferred.
  • No Premier Qualifying Points (PQP) Earnings: If you're looking to earn Premier Qualifying Points (PQP) to achieve or maintain MileagePlus Premier® status with United, the United Explorer Card offers a more direct path to earning PQP through card spending. The Sapphire Preferred does not provide this specific benefit.

Credit Card Reviews Methodology

In order to determine the best possible credit cards, we look at things like fees, interest rates and rewards. We do this with companies that are associated with us as partners as well as other offerings. From there, we make a decision about what the best card is related to different categories and needs. We focus on interest rate cost & fees, especially the cost of carrying a balance, rewards – cards accumulate rewards in different currencies—points, miles, cash back—and their values vary widely usability – cards that accept a wide range of credit profiles and offer simple solutions for things like checking your credit score or contacting. We also consider customer reviews.

We look at cards related to good or excellent credit ratings that will then provide a range of different benefits and improvements for someone who has these scores. We also look at low fees when it comes to those who have lower credit scores.
